Why motivation isn't enough

Motivation is great. We all want more of it. We want to feel as though something bigger than ourselves is driving us to do things that we feel we wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.


Motivation has it’s purpose but when it comes to long term and challenging goals. It simply isn’t enough to get us all the way.


Motivation will get us off the couch, and put the running shoes on. It will boost your energy levels and encourage you to do something different to begin with.


But it is not there when you didn’t get much sleep the night before and your into your 8th day of fitness and you are simply just too tired. It’s not there when you are emotionally upset and feeling deflated, and it definitely ain’t there when things aren’t going to plan.


This is where you need to have developed rituals. Rituals are something that happens every day, IRRELEVANT to how you are feeling about it. Having good rituals takes practice, we need to develop this muscle.


When we do an action, or feel a certain way on a consistent basis, our brain makes things easier for us by connecting neurons together so that pathways becomes easier to do repetitively. That is why change is initially difficult as our lower sub conscious brain is telling us that we are doing this wrong and can we please go back to how we have always done things in the past, as that is where our brain is comfortable.


In order to change we need to go through a period of discomfort or unease. If we didn’t we would never change or grow. Motivation will help get us through the initial phase. It can help to give our minds another place to go when it is screaming at us that what we are trying to do is stupid, wrong and you really don’t know what you are talking about. Who are you to …. blah blah blah. You know the kind of stuff I’m talking about.


Your lower brain is scared - It hates change. It wants to keep to safe in a little ball of cotton wool and keep things simple. It doesn’t tell us that outright. It simply puts sneaky little nasty thoughts into our heads to encourage us to make choices that it thinks is right for us to keep us safe.


That is where we get to use more of our conscious brain, and become aware of those nasty little thoughts and choose not to give them any power by listening to them. We can choose to think about something different, we can think about what our motivation is to change, whether it be intrinsically or extrinsically derived.


Then we need to implement rituals. Start small. Make a small commitment you can do every day. Make it so simple, and easy to do that you pretty much can’t not do it. You see often we have a belief that we can’t, don’t or never stick to our commitments.


While ever we hold that belief we are never going to achieve all that we want in life.


Nothing is ever achieved without consistent action taken, towards is attainment. It is not the BIG action that is needed - It is consistency. It is the everyday mundane, incremental shifts that will ultimately move the needle.


So start small, develop a ritual that use can then leverage on. You can say to your self “I committed to X everyday, and have followed through so I now know that I can commit to y ”. You will then develop another slightly bigger ritual, and you will feed of that, to then implement a ritual that will really start to make some changes.


Once you see that feel the changes, you will then find it easier to stick to your rituals.


But there are a few things to keep in mind here;


1. Don’t let those sneaky little thoughts enter you head. I found when I first started going to the gym at 5.30am it was easy for the first week as I was “motivated” but then as time went on and my muscles started to ache, I found myself having conversations in my head when my alarm went off. Sneaky little thoughts stated telling me - Oh, your riding another horse today so that can be your fitness, or Nic isn’t going to be there so no one will notice that I’m not there” and so on and so on.
What I had to do is as soon as the alarm went off - Get up. Get up quick before the sneaky little thoughts had a chance to open their mouths. I had my clothes beside my bed so I virtually fell into them. Once I was up there was no problem getting to the gym. Those sneaky little thoughts never had a chance


2. Stick to the small ritual you initially started. There will be a time when things happen and you notice you haven’t been sticking to your big ritual. At that point it can be easy to quit, and make up some sort of excuse as to why it wasn’t for you in the first place. We usually then start getting frustrated and berating ourselves. “You idiot, you knew you could never do it. Oh look, you’ve given up again……” Listening to those thoughts are only going to move us away from our goals, so if you slip up, don’t worry. Be kind to yourself. Think, it’s OK. I am still doing X, I haven’t quit. By sticking to the one simple ritual, you are still in the game. It is easier to make a tackle when you still have your footy boots on!


3. Notice if you start to miss the small ritual as that’s where things start to unravel. This one is a big one for me personally. I have a series of rituals that I do everyday. I had noticed on reflection that whenever I slipped up on my big ritual, I had always slipped up on my little one first. Usually a couple of days before I gave up on the big one. Now I am aware of this, I notice when the little one get’s shaky, and I make darn sure that I continue to do that little one no matter what. When I do that I am able to get through the tricky few days where I may have been more emotional, or life was busy or whatever and continue to do my little ritual. In doing that my big ones hold fast too.


4. Don’t let emotions have a say in your rituals. These rituals need to be done on days when you are happy, days when you feel like everyone is against you, days when you feel useless, days when you are crazy busy, or days when you can’t be bothered and would rather be doing something else. Rituals don't care. I don’t care how you feel. You do them anyway.


HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT DOING YOUR RITUAL DOESN’T MATTER.
YOU JUST DO THEM.
END OF STORY


So if you have a big goal - Bloody Fantastic!


Set yourselves 3 rituals today.


One that you will begin today. Make it easy. Ensure it is something you are willing to commit to.


Another that that is uncomfortable, but is achievable and has short term gains.


Lastly, one that makes you feel a little uneasy about doing it, but that you know will ultimately move the needle towards where you are heading and give you long term results.


Start with the first, and when you trust yourself in sticking to your commitments, implement the other two. How long this takes is different for everyone. Some will be onto all 3 in three days, others might take three weeks. How ever long it takes for you is perfectly fine.


You know you are well on your way, when these rituals become so sub conscious that you find yourself doing them without even thinking about it. You have connected neurons together in such a way that they fire together effortlessly. There are no nasty little conversations going on in your head, as they know there is no point speaking up, they won’t be heard anyway.

Making Progress

It doesn't matter what we are moving towards. Whether it is something we are wanting to achieve, something we are wanting to change or something we want. In order to achieve it, we need to be taking some sort of action towards that outcome.

This is no surprise to anyone.

We have all heard that we need to be take things one step at a time, but in my and many of my clients experiences it is not quite a simple as that.

I know from my own personal journey, sometimes I felt like I was striding forth, sword in hand, arm outstretched ready to take the castle, and next thing I knew it I felt like I was curled up an a metaphorical foetal position in the lounge room floor ( Yes, I actually remember a time where in my mind I could see my self on the floor feeling completely and utterly exhausted)

I remember thinking this is all too hard, I should just quit trying. And then I looked at what quitting was, what was involved and what my life would look like if I did. It didn’t look good - In fact it looked so shitty that I realised there was no quit, it was no longer an option.

That one thought gave me strength. I no longer questioned whether I could achieve my goal. There  was no question, no fork in the road, only a bumpy, windy, corrugated surface filled with bull dust and the occasional road kill.

So from my metaphorical lounge room floor, I lifted my head, propped one elbow under my shoulder and dragged my sorry arse forward and inch. I rested, and did it again. Then I was able to get a knee under me and stand before taking a wobbly shuffle forward.

You see - this wonderful journey called life isn’t one big freeway heading towards shiny things and swimming pools. It’s definitely not all down hill and the wind is not always behind us, but that is a good thing!

If we didn’t need to stop and fix and flat tyre we would have missed the koala in the trees, and if we didn’t get bogged in the bull dust we would not have met the person who could go on to become a great friend, mentor or teacher.

It’s funny - We have the mentality that in order to succeed, we must to be moving ahead at the same speed or faster than everyone else and with huge amounts of motivation and gusto, then everything will fall onto place. The problem with that is it can all look so big and unachievable, and if we are not willing to see the journey or the process as the outcome it is easy to get disheartened and not try at all. Quitting then,  isn’t a problem, because you won’t even start!

Moving towards our goals simply means we are doing a little bit every day, even if it is tiny. Even if it is crawling on your hands and knees, because crawling will build momentum.

Crawling leads to walking, walking will get you to the metaphorical gym, which will develop your mental, physical and emotional strength and fitness.  Knowing that when you get knocked down it won’t bother you is a super strong strength to develop!

It will mean the hard, scary stuff won’t be so scary anymore because you know you can still crawl forward if you fall!

You will know that no matter what, you can still lift your head, get an elbow under your shoulder, drag a knee up and place your foot flat on the floor and rise again.

Knowing that in you gut is all you need.

There you will find that because you are no longer afraid of the fall - the fear or the judgement, it won’t bother you anymore leaving you to hold steady in the wind and jump the potholes in the road.

The road won’t feel so bumpy, you will build shock absorbers and get better tyres.


So from an equestrian perspective, no matter your goal - Keep moving forwards from wherever you land.

Not everything will go to plan all of the time. Sometimes you will have ground rounds, jump superbly and move up a level, but it is also going to go to shit at some point. Maybe for only a short time, maybe it will feel like forever but when it does, and it will - It’s OK.

The difference between those who will eventually succeed at achieving their goals, is between those who are willing to dare to fail, and those who won’t. Those who get up and those who don’t.

You will succeed when you know you can handle whatever happens

Getting back into the game

Well it certainly has been quite some time since I last wrote anything in the Blog section.

I have spent the last 12 months making sure that I am walking my own walk, as well as talking the talk in regards to my own choices, behaviours and direction in life.

I wanted to know that I could have conversations with people who are looking to achieve much more than they currently are from an experiential place where I have made the mistakes and done the tough miles to get to where I am now . I needed to take this journey so I could help to show the way so much clearer for my clients. I needed to understand the process intuitively so I can be more compassionate and understanding.

When I look back at my last Blog which was in June 2018, my first thought is what have I achieved since then, was it all worth it.

Thankfully, all I can say is YES! Yes, Yes, Yes. This journey has been so worth it, and it is still continuing. I hope it will forever continue. I wan't to know that I am continually growing and improving myself. That will mean more challenges and getting out of my comfort zone, getting out of my own way, but I have done that enough in the last 2 years to know in my gut that on the other side of every challenge is a reward far greater than I could have expected.

I am no longer afraid of the challenge. I am not afraid of rejection and not afraid of failure. 

What have I achieved since that last Blog? - Well, it all depends how you look at it. I could say I have travelled to China coaching, represented my country as a coach, created a new online business, completed my course, facilitated and spoken at workshops/seminars/presentations, furthered my coaching qualifications, grown my coaching business and got back into starting young horses and riding competitively again but as far as I am concerned they are only symptoms, only feedback from what I have really achieved in the last 12 months.

I have developed far better and more meaningful relationships, strengthened my emotional intelligence and resilience, taken my fitness and  health to a whole new level, overcome addictions, developed partnerships with people who challenge and inspire me, faced and dealt with difficult past experiences and found so much meaning to those experiences. I have forgiven and understood, learnt how to meditate and focus my mind towards a much clearer intention, know when and why I am procrastinating and how to move out of that into action, reignited my passion and rejuvinated my energy levels,  found my sense of purpose and know my drivers that will help get me there, and am now on my way of becoming the best of who I can be. I have learnt I am enough - 

I am young enough 
I am old enough
I am experienced enough
I am brave enough
I am loving enough
I am smart enough
I am good enough
and I am tough enough

I am worthy and I am grateful xx

Facing the anxiety, bringing all those fears out into the light and owning them. Appreciating them and then using them as a tool to keep me moving forward. Understanding that they had no more power over me has been such a wonderful experience and I am so grateful of the awareness and emotional resilience I now have to be able to handle everything that comes my way. It may not get it right every time - and that is OK

So now I am back - ready to serve. Ready to help others transform their lives.

Ready to help you find the path that brings you more joy, more love and more success!

You are sooo worth it!

Are we corrupting the contact?

This is a fun way of looking at an “unsteady contact” from a different perspective.

There are times where riders have difficulty maintaining a steady contact with their horse. Often those riders also have unsteady hands to varying degrees, and tend to try and jiggle, or see saw the reins to get their horse “On the bit”. 
This is a different way of helping them see how they are influencing that contact. Are they corrupting or caressing it?


Simply saying things like keep you hands quiet and still, is often not enough to create genuine change, as there needs to be a deeper understanding of the riders responsibility in producing the desired feel. It's a bit like the chicken and the egg analogy. We can't speak with the horse using words, and ask them to be quieter in the mouth, but we can encourage the rider to be the one to have ownership and take the first step towards helping the horse seek the contact, as the horse is looking to have a quiet, balanced conversation with the rider.

By turning things around, and looking at the issue from how “we” are influencing the feel on the horses mouth is one of MANY steps to allowing the horse to relax into the contact and let their body loose.

I like to think of the contact as feedback. It’s like a radio station. You are hearing through a set of speakers in the horses mouth. What you hear is directly related to what is happening in the horses whole body. If you imagine that we are wanting to hear classical music, but our hands are playing AC/DC then the rock music will be louder and we can’t hear the horses own music.

For this exercise, I ask the rider to imagine their hands are now the horses mouth, and the horses mouth are now a riders hands. This can be incredibly tough for some to comprehend, and the rider will often need to be reminded that only the rider themselves can influence “the bit” (The one they are holding)

To make this even more animated I often place a bit in the riders hands, and have them hold the rings of the bit with their thumbs as a reminder. I will mention things like “You are the bit. Only you can influence how the bit feels in your hands” 

You can then bring the riders awareness to what does the bit actually feel like in their hands? Is it steady, or is it moving around a lot? Remind them that however much the bit in their hands is moving, that much movement is also being transferred to the horses mouth, and how would that feel if the horses mouth were a set of hands. What word would you use to describe it?
Ask the rider to take their awareness to the horses mouth, and ask themselves to be honest and describe how it feels to the riders hands at the horses mouth. What sort of music is he hearing?


I tend to do this mostly in walk and trot, and aren’t too picky on where the rider goes. As long as the horse is not leaving the arena, or getting a bit quick I like to keep it simple. If the rider is more advanced in their training you can then start to incorporate smaller circles, transitions and even lateral work, but that is all up to where the coach see’s appropriate.

Obviously, this discussion takes place whilst looking at the riders position, how the horse is working over his back, engaging his core and hind quarters, and allowing his body to be loose, so please keep in mind, this exercise is only part of solving the problem, and won’t solve the problem in itself, but is a great start.


I know this all sounds confusing to begin with, but once you get your head around it, it is hugely enlightening. 
The best part is – once the rider takes some ownership of the contact, ensuring there are no blocks in their own body, and looks at it from a horses point of view, the horse completely relaxes and lets their body loose as they are no longer being corrupted. 
It is a hugely rewarding response.

10 Tips to engage your learners

1. Let them know you learnt what you know now from someone else.

It's important that your little riders know that everything you know and do now, was  learnt by making mistakes and from listening and absorbing information from others. Tell them about your role models and coaches from when your were younger, and if you learnt something by making the mistake, tell them about that too. It helps them to know that making mistakes, and being OK with now knowing everything is what is going to make them a better rider in the future.

2. Use Analogy's and Metaphor's

This is a great way to engage riders who are more orientated to Right Brain Processing. For example, if you are describing "Feel on the horses mouth". You might talk about dancing with someone. Would you rather dance with someone who keeps going out of step, and pulling you off balance or someone who won't hold your hand, and feels like you dancing holding a wet fish. Describe how it feels when your dancing with someone who is happy to lead, and makes you feel important but who also allows you to move and adjust the dance steps with a willingness and connection.

If you are talking about staying tall and balanced through a turn you might talk about having a Merry Go Round Pole going through your head, down your back, through the horse and to the ground. If you leaned to far over the pole would detach from the roof and the whole ride would come to a halt, and a whole lot of kids would start screaming. The weirder and crazier you make it the more they will remember it when you are not there.

For riders who tend to look down after a fence, you can use the analogy of a cat strutting away in front of you with his tail up and his backside looking right at you. Your laughing at the cat because he is about to get run over. You can tell your rider to look at the backside of the cat. Yes - It's a bit full on, ever kinda wrong but  can guarantee your little riders will be looking ahead at the cats pucker instead the ground!

3. Use all the senses.

This is great when talking about transitions. While you are first discussing the aids, and the process by which the horses changes gaits, you may use questions like. How would it sound. What would the footfalls sound like? What would you see or be looking at as you move through the transition? What would it look like from my perspective? How would it feel if it was done really well? How would it feel in your hips, your hands, your elbows, your breath? You may even ask them if they saw, or have felt a really good transition like that before. Ask questions like - What could you smell when you were watching it, were you beside some pine trees in the arena etc

4. Give them the Right and the Wrong Options to try.

Little people don't learn by doing what they are told. They need to experience it and then make the decision for themselves as to whether this is a good thing to do or not. I often give them the right and wrong options to try and then let them make the decision on what one worked best. For example, a simple turn for a beginner. You can ask the rider to ride in a straight line towards and object, turn around it and then come back in a straight line. Ask them once, to turn by pulling the inside rein in towards the midline of the horse, and relax the outside rein. Let them lean in towards the peg/cone and when they return talk about the size of the turn, what part of the horse moved, how smooth it felt etc. Ask them to go again, this time keeping a feel on the outside rein, opening the inside rein slightly and closing the outside leg and looking in the direction they are going and then come back. Talk about how the second turn varied, and them let them decide what way was better.

5. Let them question everything

Riders will often interpret what we say very differently to how it was intended. For example, simple directions like ride a small circle will vary from rider to rider. What small is can very from a 0.2m three point turn, to half a paddock. This is a very simple example but if you notice your rider is getting lost in translation talk through your description again, and make sure you are both on the same page on all the small things.

Often all a rider is asking for is better clarification on what the outcome is. The rider is not questioning your knowledge, they are simply saying, I am missing something here. Can you please give me this information in another way that I can better understand.

This is a great time to use an analogy, chuck down the movement, and practice the steps leading up to the skill, give the movements that this exercise is leading the rider towards achieving in the future. Most importantly allow the rider to discuss what is happening, be ready to acknowledge them when they are heading the right way, and be there to keep them on the right track if they are lost. Validate their efforts. How fast or slow a rider picks things up is not dependent on how quick you did when you were learning it, but how well you are able to pass those concepts on in a way that the rider needs to be able to process the information.

6. Use Technology

There are so many apps out there now that are useful in coaching. One of my favourites in an app called, Technique. It allows you to video a rider and then draw straight, or squiggly lines over the image. You can also place two different video clips side by side and put them on slow motion so that for example, both clips have the horse jumping at the same time. This allows the riders to see a clear difference. It can also be very handy when describing to a rider who sits off to one side of the saddle during a leg yield. By standing behind the rider and videoing, you can immediately show the rider on your phone, the mid line by drawing a line down the image so they can see for themselves how straight or NOT they are. Often a rider won't believe you until you show them the evidence, once they have seen it, it's no longer on you as the coach to make the change. You have shown them the evidence, explained why this is a problem, offer them a solution and then it's up to them to make the change. If they have taken it all on board, your riders will be much more willing to make the changes needed as the ball is in their court now, and there is a sense of responsibility and accountability.

7. Use Tangible evidence.

This is huge for little guys. Even simple things like being straight/parallel is better understood using two poles. Moving sideways one step at a time between two poles that are parallel, but with the "go to" pole slight further ahead then the "Going from" pole, helps them to notice if a shoulder or hind quarter is closer to the Go to pole. You can even go as far as measuring in Chicken Steps the distance from the pole to the HQ's and the same from the pole to the Shoulders. Anytime there is an opportunity to let a pole/cone/drum do the teaching for you (especially for little guys) the quicker they will work out the concept. Wait for the Ahh, haa moments.

8. Give them homework.

This doesn't necessarily mean exercises or things to practice, however that is important but in a tech savvy world with so much great information out there, give them links to the movement or exercise you are currently working on or working towards so they can see it done well. Always check your links, and make sure the advice on the video is sound. There are training videos now on every dressage movement just about known to mankind. This also helps your riders remember you had to learn from somewhere too, and that is important we keep updating our knowledge. Ask them to write down any questions that come up during the video so you can discuss them suring your next session. Often during these chats, is where the "Missing Link" is found and the riders can move on with more assurance and understanding then ever before.

9. Validate their fear.

Get excited for your little guys when they are scared. Let them say to you - I am getting a little bit scared now! Champion them for that. Let them know that in order to be scared you must be doing something that is pushing your comfort zone out a bit, AWESOME!!! That's how we get better. No one gets better by doing nothing.

Let them know the courage doesn't come until AFTER you have done what scares you.

Let them be vulnerable, vulnerability is not a weakness. It's strength. To admit you are feeling vulnerable and to then go and do it anyway is huge!

Let them know that if it all going pear shaped, you will still be there for them. You won't abandon, or shame them if they get it wrong, you'll be there for them whatever happens, because it is often not the success that grows us as riders, it's in the failure when the magic starts to really happen.

10. Teach them the wonders of mistakes.

This is huge! We all make mistakes, no one is perfect, and quite frankly, who would want to be anyway. After the initial mistake or perceived "failure", let them discuss how it made them feel, don't judge their feelings, simply let them talk it through. Then let them look at -  What else could we make that event mean? How is this moving you towards where you are wanting to go? What do I know now that I didn't know before? They can be tough questions to answer initially, especially for teenage girls, but with a bit of practice this can be an enjoyable experience. You'll have to trust me on this one :)

Help them to get excited when they find something that they find hard, or don't know. That means they are about to learn something they didn't know before, and be able to do something they didn't know they could. How wonderful...

It's the 360 that counts

Often when I am working with a new client in the show jumping arena, I notice that they aren't paying enough attention to how they ride between their fences. From their perspective all that counts is whether the the fences are left up or not.

I need to help them to understand and know if their gut why it is important to ride a good line, and have good rhythm and balance. If I can't help them see the importance of it, then I will have little hope of having them consistently ride in rhythm or balanced. My job is to create a picture in their head so they want to improve the in between.

I like to use the analogy that for an approximate 400m show jumping track of 10 fences, there is 40m of jumping and 360m of everything in between. If all we focus on is the 40m, we are wasting what essentially is going to produce the quality jump.

It's the 360m that is truly important, the 40m is only feedback, it's the truth of how well we managed the 360.

There is no doubt that the bascule and quality of the jump can be influenced in the 40m but usually in a more negative way through the riders uneven distribution of weight, sharp sudden aids, or a blockage in the body. 

We can influence the jump in a positive way by using placing poles, lead in rails, adding texture to the fence, adjusting the height of the front and back rails etc etc but in the end none of that is beneficial if we aren't paying attention to the 360.

Rhythm is everything!

Rhythm is feedback. 

If a horse is having trouble keeping a good rhythm then there is something else going on, either the horse is not staying in front of the riders leg, the horse is bracing his ribcage to one side, the horse is drifting off the line, the horse is on the forehand, or there is tension in either the horse and/or the rider.

Often I have riders say that they have trouble seeing a good distance. It is not that they don't have good hand eye co-ordination, it's simply that the horse is not staying in a good rhythm all the way to the fence.

Think of it this way - in order to see a good distance/stride/take off spot we need to judge how long our horses stride is, in relation to the distance between where you they are currently and where the fence is. If the horse either starts increasing his speed or lengthening his stride as you approach the fence then your 'spot' is now going to get closer to the fence unless they miss a stride and take off from a long way away.

Alternatively if you have judged your 'spot' 5 strides out and your horse drifts out on the turn, then the distance from where you were to the fence is now considerably longer leading to your spot being further away unless you have been quick enough to increase the horses stride to acommodate for the longer distance, but that can then lead to a flatter bascule over the fence, and if it is a tall vertical then a rail will likely fall as a consequence.

The fact is, it wasn't the horse that jumped badly, we simply allowed the horse to drift off the line you had predetermined, so the jump you had wanted couldn't be produced.

In between the fences is where you have the opportunity to make small changes to the canter early, producing the canter necessary to create the best quality jump possible. This will vary in relation to the fence ie: the width, how narrow or spooky it is, the height, the distance and line to the following fence. 

Riders who are able to make small, subtle adaptations early, while keeping a rhythm, and staying on their line will rarely have trouble 'seeing their stride'.

This is hugely important on cross country. Riders who tend to gallop flat out in between fences and then make last minute, sudden changes to the canter coming to the fence will often have trouble with their horses chipping in, and are more likely to run out, however those who are able to pick up a quality gallop, and keep a consistent rhythm all the way around the course will rarely have trouble making time, and the fences tend to come up easily and without much fuss.

Obviously, on course there are times where you need to shorten, and engage the canter for skinny, or combination fences but this is still done early, subtly and staying in rhythm. 

I truly believe:

"We don't have the right to influence a horse until we are in rhythm with it" 

Meaning, when we are schooling, first we need to know WHAT IS HAPPENING underneath us before we start making corrections. 

Having a "global feel" means we are aware of the horses body from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail, and everything in between... all at once!

Often, once we simply scan our own body for tension, or blockages while following the feel of our horses, and accepting whatever is for the minute without judgement, the horses relax and settle into their own rhythm. Then we can start to notice where their blockages in their body are and start to correct the horse without causing resentment.

I find once the riders know what is happening 'globally' in both themselves and their horses, they can then influence the horse by making small, subtle corrections early, stay in rhythm, and ride accurate approaches and turns, producing consistent good distances and athletic jumping efforts. 

All they need to do then is stay present for the horse from the minute they enter the arena, to the minute they leave knowing that it's the 360m that will essentially produce a quality 40m jump!

A coaches perspective - who are our clients?

Who do we serve?

When working with a new client, especially children, there are three parties I serve.

The Rider, the Horse and the Parent or Significant Other.

I need to know what are the needs of each part of the triad. The triangle is the strongest shape, so if I am looking to get the best result possible for my client(s) I want strength. Strength in knowing that I am serving the needs of everyone involved, and that we are working as a collaborative team towards the same goal.

The horse is important as without him, we are nothing. He is the real teacher!
The rider is important as they are the facilitators of it all, and
The parents are important as they are the support structure that holds it all together. (Plus, they are usually the ones paying the bills - lets be honest here :) The parents are also the ones who spends most time with the rider. I might only see them once or twice a week. We need to be all on the same page, so there are no confusing messages.

To do this, It's imperative I know what does everyone need from me as a coach?
I need to know two things.

1. What are my clients highest values?
2. What is the outcome of this rider working with me?

This will greatly affect both what, and how I coach my rider.

To get a greater understanding of this we need to understand values. All three corners have values, including the horse!

An value can be an "emotional state we want to experience on a consistent basis" (Sharon Pearson) They are the things that drive us, make us who we are and affect our decisions. If we are wanting to facilitate change we need to make sure this change is congruent with our clients values.

Examples of values are:
Adventure, Courage, Calm, Excitement, Passion, Serenity, Structure, Organisation, Planning, Challenge, Compassion, Love, Comfort, Play, Security, Certainty, Trust, Confidence, Collaboration, Determination, Creativity, Respect, Connection

As you can imagine, the needs of someone who values Adventure, are going to greatly differ to someone who values Security.

Imagine being asked if you want to jump out of a plane? Someone who's values are Calm, Certainty, and Comfort are not likely to be the first one to jump up and down saying "Pick me, Pick me", however someone who values excitement highly likely will.

Where it gets interesting is, if a parents values are comfort and security, and the riders are adventure and courage then there may be some conflict. It even adds a new level if the horses highest values are trust, and confidence.

Here for an example is a rider who is wanting to change things up, challenge themselves at every opportunity but the horse is saying hang on, your moving too fast, I need to accept, and be OK with one thing before I can move onto another, then the parent is saying things are getting a bit crazy over here - I am not very comfortable where all this is going.

I often see this scenario. It usually ends in the horse loosing all confidence in his rider, the rider getting angry because the horse is now stopping at fences and stressing out. The parent is upset as she doesn't know how to comfort her child who is now totally frustrated and in tears.

This can easily be solved with a little imagination and creativity from the coach. A rider who values adventure and courage don't need to be doing crazy heights in order to get their needs met on a horse who can't handle having their thresholds constantly challenged without compassion and understanding.
I can facilitate this through making adventure out of being creative in ways to help build trust and confidence in the horse. You may do this through making smaller fences more challenging by asking the rider to see if they can jump between two cones placed on a pole, jumping angles, jumping water trays and walking over tarps. You can give them courage by showing how they can give their horse courage by giving him time to work out the puzzle, and waiting for the green light to proceed onto the next skill.
The parent who is needing comfort and security can see that there is progress being made in a safe and progressive manner.
This isn't saying that we should keep this combination jumping 45cms for the rest of eternity, it simply means that the combination can only go as fast as the horse is ready to accept new challenges. This in itself can be very difficult for the rider to do, especially when they just can't wait to move onto the next big thing, but once the rider understands to more they keep their horses needs first, the faster the horse will accept change and be braver.

Let's look at another scenario -

Here we have a horse who values play, is extroverted and confidant. The rider values connection and the parent values determination.

This usually plays out with a horse who can be clever and perhaps has a tendency to buck in exuberance. The rider doesn't want to be too strong with the horse as she see's that as being mean and the parents is angry at the daughter as she perceives the child as being scared and not getting on with it.

This often ends in tears as the rider becomes scared of the horse who is now completely running the show. The child is well aware that the parent is disappointed in her lack of determination and feels as though her mum doesn't think she is any good.

This is one of my greatest, but favourite challenges as I need to build the riders confidence in herself first, to allow her to play more of a leadership role for her horse. The main thing is to help the rider understand that to have a good connection with her horse, there needs to be a partnership, it's a little like dancing.

No one likes to dance with someone who completely takes over without his or her partner knowing the dance, and then repremanding them for not keeping up.
Neither do we like to dance with someone who is afraid to even step onto the floor or holds our hand like a wet fish.
We want to dance with someone who can lead as well as they can follow.

I help the rider to understand in order be interesting enough for our horse to pay attention and want to dance, we need to make it worth him joining in, otherwise he will want to make his own games up. These horses like challenges and love new things, so I tend to keep the sessions with these combinations moving quickly with lots of different exercises giving the rider plenty of opportunity to notice when she has taken on a leadership role. I keep explaining how to be connected and dance with our horses we need to reward when reward is due, and give ourselves credit for the ability to take small steps towards being worthy, and see the worth in stepping up onto the floor. This also helps the parent see the child making progress in extending her comfort zone and lifting her courage and determination.

Knowing what drives our clients is imperative, otherwise we are simply teaching what drive us as coaches. That will work for those clients who hold similar values to our own, but limits our ability to help those who's needs are very different to ours, unless we are willing to respect our clients values and coach in a way that is moving them all towards the same goal staying congruent to what is important to them.

Wish takes us to number 2 - What is their outcome?

I like to bring this one up early, as it can be tricky. It is important that everyone is honest and willing discuss their fears and desires.

Outcomes will, and do change as learning progresses, but I need to know are we all here to compete and succeed at the highest level possible, are we here to build the child's confidence and teach them skills in communication and trust, or do they simply love riding and want to be safe and have fun on their horses? All of the above are true to some degree in most cases, but I need this to be openly discussed so there is transparency and open dialogue.
Often times, the parents simply want the kids to be happy, whether they are jumping 80cm or 4* and it is important that the kids know that if that is the case. (see button Thanks Mum" below or http://www.rangaterasporthorses.com/blog/may-30th-2017

Other times, there is a great push from both parent and child to compete at the highest level possible, and that is great too. We discuss what will be required in order to make that happen so that everyone is aware of the dedication and responsibilities that decision holds. 

This can often be an interesting conversation and there times where I have felt like a family councillor, but if we are going to be a team, then we all need to make sure we are doing our part. 

I have had amazing results simply by having this conversation with the families, especially when I speak for the horse and make sure that both the rider and the parents see what is required from the horses perspective to allow him to be willing to join the dance.

Once the child understands what his or her responsibilities are, knows that we are all on this journey with them, and is willing to accept his/her part in the process everything works so much fluidly.

So who do I serve? Who is my client?

All three in equal doses!

What makes a good coach?

Having worked as a coach in a private girls boarding school for many years with an Equestrian Centre attached, I have worked with many many coaches coming through the centre.

We have had Olympic medalists, World Cup Riders, Australian representatives in all Olympic Disciplines, Cutting trainers, Natural Horsemanship Clinicians, those just starting out on their coaching journey and everything in between.

I have ridden and coached in several different countries, learning from as many coaches as I could along the way.

One thing that stood out was the difference between those who were professional riders, who coached for a living and those who were professional coaches who rode for self improvement. Of course there are those in the middle also, but the contrast between these two groups of coaches was huge.

I wanted to know what worked, what didn't. Being a good coach isn't necessarily about how much you know. It's about how you can share the information in a way that your student understands so they are able to make changes not because you said so, but because you have helped them know in themselves that this or that approach is the best way to go.

A rider will only make a change for the better long term, if they truly believe that the change is right for them, and they can see how making the change will improve their results in the future. They have to feel that it is right in their body, they have to know it before they will do it consistently.

It doesn't matter if you are coaching pony club kids, polocrosse riders, dressage mums, barrel racers, eventers or someone to jump rabbits. I'm not here to tell you what you should teach, everyone has slightly different views on whats important.

I just here to help you with some tips that I have learned over the years, in my pursuit of excellence in coaching. I have been passionately curious about learning and teaching since I was 15. That is what drives me.

I also work in schools with gifted children and those that are  on the Autism spectrim. Often it is a fine line between the two of them. I know that as a coach, I do things very differently. Some say it's a fine line between genius and insanity, I would say I spent more time in the latter but strive towards the first.

Working with Autistic Children is similar to working with horses. You need to be very grounded in yourself, willing to compromise and adapt whilst maintaining clear boundries and a great imagination.

I can honestly say I have watched and immersed myself the coaching style of well over 50 coaches both in Australia and overseas.
Most of these were Equestrian Coaches but I also made the effort to study under coaches from other sports, and within the education system, simply to see how they related with their athletes and what strategies did they use to get the best performance possible.

Here are a few things that I observed from the coaches who were able to get long lasting results. Those who had students competing at a high level successfully, whilst maintaining their integrity and keeping the horse as the number 1 priority.
I have also included some great quotes from some of my mentors

They have imagination and are willing to adapt their coaching style to suit the riders needs.
They are able to keep the riders values as a high priority.
They explains the why's of the exercise, not just the do's
"They are able to make corrections without causing resentment" John Wooden
They continually grow and improve their skills.

They are aware of and respect horse and rider thresholds, and respond to them accordingly.
They respect and work collaboratively with other coaches
They start a lesson with an end in mind, but are willing to adapt where necessary.
They are understand fully the mechanics of both horse and rider.
They don't let a rider make the horses problem, their problem
They don't make a riders problem theirs either.
"They have a clean ego. Nothing to defend and nothing to prove" Joe Pane
They talk straight and tell the truth, but always with compassion.
They develop and maintain trust
They show loyalty
They acknowledge the unsaid. They hear what is being said in the silence.
They listen as much as they speak
They have clear expectations and boundries
They are willing to hold themselves accountable, as they also do their students.
They own their mistakes, and know the lessons within them.
They have respect, not through intimidation, but through the ability to have the riders know they have the integrity, competancy and compassion to help them grow
They keep judgement out of the coaching session.
They are 100% present for their students at all times during a coaching session

I am not saying I can do all of the above consistently myself, but it is certainly something I strive towards. For me personally, I'm not out to coach the next Olympic team.
If we look at statistics in eventing for example, in last year there were around 98 riders who have competed 3* and above, 236 2*, 535 1* and 4,737 who competed Prelim or below. That's not even considering the tens of thousands of riders who are competing in other disciplines, pony club or simply ride for the enjoyment.

Nope, I never ridden 4*.
Nope, I have never ridden World Cup and
Nope, I have not ridden a FEI Grand Prix test

but, I have spent tens of thousands of hours studying my craft, as so have many of other wonderful coaches I have had the pleasure to work alongside. We're out there to help the masses, and happy to pass on a student to a coach who has the knowledge, and the experience who understands the art of quality coaching to take my students to the next level.

Yes, there is no doubt, experience and riding ability is hugely important, but not at the expense of those which I have mentioned above!

So, what makes a good coach? 

The ability to know your strengths and weaknesses, be proud of them, acknowledge them, and be willing to develop both. 

Most importantly, be passionately curious about your craft!

The role of a coach at a competition

I had been fortunate enough to have worked as a coach in a private school for 13 years that had an equestrian programme attached to it. During a regular term we could have over 100 horses on the property with all of those riders have regular weekly lessons.

This meant that on any given day I could be coaching 10 riders or more per day, 6 days a week. During competitions is was not unusual to have 20 riders under my guidance, and often up to 40 at a big Interschools event. This has given me huge amount of experience in what is required of me, to best prepare my students for a successful weekend.

My belief is that my role as a coach in the warm up is to simply ensure the horse and rider were in the best frame of mind, to produce a result to which we had been working towards, in the lead up to the event. This result is not determined by a ribbon received, but by whether both the horse and rider gave 100% towards the outcome, and achieved a particular predetermined goal. Any ribbon gained, or accolades given are purely a bonus. They are things that help keep us keen, and motivated and are great when telling family and friends "how we went" on the weekend, but whether we win or lose in regards to placings, only the horse and rider will truly know whether they really won.

These goals may be as simple as producing a calm test where the horse is willing in his work and allowing the rider to help him stretch into the contact in the free walk, it may be being able to keep a consistant rhythm through out an entire show jumping track, or having the horse stay honest and straight over skinny combinations during cross country.

Unless I am warming up a student whom I have not worked with prior (I will discuss this in more detail later), my students have a process in which we can produce a particular way of going on a consistent basis.

During our sessions in the months leading up to and during the event season, we are making many associations, both between myself and the rider, as well as the rider to the horse. When a rider is warming up for an event, I don't want them have too much on their mind. I really feel for the riders who as they are walking towards the ring they are bombarded with comments like, "make sure you ride strong into the planks, keep you legs on, remember to sit up, don't let him stop at the water tray and so on and so on".

I need to ensure that we have schooled as many of these scenarios at home as possible, and not only once. We school then over and over again until the is the rider is able to know what sort of canter is needed, how he need to prepare the horse in relations to it shape before and after the fence, know what sort of line best suits his horse and how quickly or slowly he need to use his aids if a response in required. We may not school these exercise over big fences, as the height is irrelevant (to a degree) in this stage of the training, it's more about producing the same positive result over and over again until it become instinctive.

Riding horses as we all know is unpredictable sport, but if I can lower the number of unpredictibilities before hand by schooling as many outcomes, and schooling them well enough that appropriate responses are unconscious then we are already a step ahead.

One of my roles as a coach is to link a large amount of information to simple words or phrases. Often in big events we may only get 5 riders ahead of us in the warm up to prepare our horse, yes, some of that is done pre entering the warm up, but often we only have 10 mins access to fences prior to jumping on course.

Having a "code word or phrase" is a way of reminding a rider of all we have been working on before hand and does several things.

1. They have confidence knowing they are able to produce a specific result on a consistent basis. Using Neuro Associative Conditioning (NAC) techniques help to link a particular emotion or feeling to the warm up.
2. I helps the riders to get "out of their head" and "into their body" so they can ride using all of their senses,  increasing their feel and ability to choose to respond rather than react if a change in the situation arises.
3. It helps to slow the breathing, and encourage deeper breath coming from the abdomen allowing the rider to think clearer and also helps the horse to stay calm and centered.

For an example, I might start with using the word "Chocolate Cake". Anyone outside might think I am crazy if all I say is chocolate cake at the warm up fence, but there are months of associations linked to that word. At home I might discuss a riders position over a fence, as I have noticed that my rider has a tendency of leaning to whatever direction she is turning after the fence and dropping her shoulder, I also have noticed she grips with her knee, dropping her hips back in the initial take off stride. So I use the analogy, that to produce a good chocolate cake we need sugar, eggs, cocoa etc. If we left out the cocoa we have a vanilla cake. To produce a good jump we need a recipe too. Every horse and riders combination is completely different relative to their needs at the time. But sticking with the rider above I use several exercises, to help her bring awareness to her body, and how she can make changes in which muscles she chooses to turn on and what ones she needs to relax, where her focus needs to be and how the language she uses affects the outcome.

Over several sessions, and many creative exercises later (many of which I will include in coming months) I am able to help that rider produce a more balanced, secure and grounded position. All the time, reminding my rider about the chocolate cake concept.

When we get to the event, knowing I have created about 10 different code words, all meaning something different, so I am prepared for as many scenarios that could come up. If I see my rider slipping back into old habits, all I need to do is say Chocolate Cake, and due to predetermined changes in the riders subconscious through consistent and clear conditioning, I am able to bring the rider immediately back to her grounded position.

I might have the catch phrase, "stay strong on your turns, and straight to your fences" or "ride your approach like you want you departure" All of these mean a whole lot more that what it sounds like as I have placed so much information in those simple phrases during the work at home, that the rider is able to subconsciously be reminded of the many things that are needed to produce the result of - Ride you approach, like you want your departure"

I have many many different strategies that I can use to centre a horse and rider combination that are letting the pressure get to them and are riding too much in their head. Many of these I will include in further blogs. However another of my favourites is a deck of cards!

I need to as a coach make sure my rider as going to the event with "A bag full of cash" not the tangible kind, but the metaphorical kind see http://www.rangaterasporthorses.com/blog/four-legged-investment-strategy and a deck of cards up their sleeve. The deck of cards represents the fact the the rider has a whole lot of predetermined responses using NAC that she can use to help her horse get back into a mindset that is going to produce the best result.

For example, for a dressage test, during our sessions at home, over time we develop a warm up programme that creates the result we need in competition, and then we keep linking that result and response with particular exercises. First we become aware of what exercise may either relax our horse, bring their life up, or build their confidence. We look for things he does well, and easily. We can then strengthen those connections. For example, we notice that for one horse, trot-walk-trot transitions, and leg yield, loop, leg yield exercise slow this horses breathing, and lets his body loose. Se we use then regularly near the end of a good session, to let our horse know he has done well and can relax. He gets rewarded, and the opportunity to rest.

This is linking a positive association to those specific exercises, where the horse is willing to go there, is confidant on the outcome, causing him to put more effort in as he has some certainty to what that exercise means. We then start to use them during the session, when he has tried really hard, or offered us more that we have asked for as a reward. We then start to use them occasionally in the warm-up to help the horse get into a confidant, willing and calm frame of mind early.

This is now a card we have up our sleeve, at a competition if the horse is getting anxious. We can go to those exercises for a few minutes to help the horse build his confidence, in his work and give him something he know he can do well. When he settles we can then move on.

I tell my students, the warm-up for dressage is not a time to school exercises the horse finds difficuilt, nor is it the time to school a new movement. You can only produce the best result up to what your horse is currently capable of.

You have worked hard at home, and your horse knows his work. You know how to ride the movements, and you know your test.

Simply, give your horse your full attention, be present, be there for him, whatever he needs, and then simply let him offer you what he has to the best of his ability. Get out of your head, and feel your body. Be for your horse what you need from him. The rest will flow like warm chocolate :)

So, in closing. Ideally, I give my students as many words, phrases, tools, playing cards and a wad of cash to use at an event. If I'm not there, they have their warm-up strategy already set out for them, and they know their outcomes and their focus.

I also think it is imperative that parents, or those who spend a lot of time with the riders in the lead up to the competition are all on the same page. They are aware of our goals and outcomes, and I have given them too, the words and phrases we have been using so they become just as an important part of the whole picture as the horse, rider and myself are.

If I am there to remind them of some of these, great, if I'm not, I know they will be OK too.

Creating positive change?


Imagination – Tends to be something we associate with children, and often we think of fairies and flying objects. Surprisingly to know, imagination is one of the tools our brains use to store, categorize and remember things. The more we lose our ability to play, imagine and be creative, we are essentially making it harder to remember information.

Lets think about the reeealy smart people out there. It’s not so much that they just know stuff, it’s more the fact that when they heard something, or learnt something once, they were immediately able to store it in such a way that it was easy to access when the information was needed. So smart people aren't’ so smart after all, they are simply really good at placing information in their head.

Obviously, the more the information excites the individual the easier it will be to remember as there is already an emotional charge to the information, a pleasure response to the knowledge. Emotion is another very strong ‘hook’ to linking memories.

Have you ever wondered what totem poles, native dances, chants, ancient customs and stories are all about. They are ways humans have learnt to pass on information through the ages when there wasn’t paper to write knowledge down on. Knowledge was passed on through story telling and imagination. These stories are very vivid, and included much talk on how the image of the story being told may have felt on the skin, what the clouds looked like, the time of the day, the smells surrounding the people in the story, all of these senses helped the imagination to create a strong image in the memory as to easily be bought back up again when needed. Often these were told through dance and celebrations where they was an emotional charge to the pleasure of the event. How often do we hear a song and think back on a fun time or loved one.

Every mark, dent, drawing on a totem pole is a ‘hook’ or association to a story which is essentially knowledge. Aboriginals used the landscape of their home to pass on information, every tree, hill, rock face etc had a hook to a story that was passed down through generations. That is why when many Aboriginal communities taken from their lands they had occupied for many many generations we so unhappy to leave. They were essentially losing much of their history and information from generations before.

So why can’t we use this hook to create associations to something we are wanting to correct or shift in our riders?

The stronger an image is in ones head, the more likely it will be remembered or responded on.

I’ll give and example of a group of kids at pony club, riding on a circle. As often happens, a couple of the riders keep running up to close behind another horse and is in danger of being kicked. The coach repeatedly yells out, “Keep your distances riders, two horse horse lengths apart” to no avail. Unless one child is kicked, breaks a leg and has a bone sticking out (which would definitely create a negative association to riding too close) the riders haven’t make it important enough to actually do anything about it.

Lets use the kids imagination to change this scenario. What if we were to ask all riders in the group to stop and imagine a bubble surrounding them. Walk a circle about two horses length to give a visual on what two horse length looks like, then ask each rider individually to describe their bubble. Is it pink, does it have glitter? Is it metallic? Is it heavy or light? Does it glow? Does it shimmer?

The more information you can get from the kids the more they will associate with it. You can then briefly talk about what could happen if they get to close to another riders bubble, it could pop, or you could bounce off it and get send into another solar system and have to live with a family of purple aliens. The weirder, the groser and the funnier the better!

What you will find is the kids will then take responsibility for their own bubble and if they are getting a little too close all you need to do is say “bubbles” and they will all immediately separate.

How much information that is linked to a word or phrase is up to you. But the benefit of placing information in a simple word is when your young rider is nervous or about to go into a class that they are anxious about, you can say the word that you have previously linked to a happy emotion and it will help your young person relax.

One cool trick, is to ask your child to think of a really funny moment, a moment where they rode really well or a time when they felt good. While they are telling you about it pull their ear lobe, or if they are uncomfortable about that ask them to pull their own ear lobe. Initailly they will laugh and think you have lost your mind, but as you both laugh and talk about the story, while still pulling the ear lobe you are essentially linking a thought to that action.

Next time you think about it, pull their ear lobe gently as you walk past and smile. Talk about the story again for a moment, even make the picture in their head brighter. Put more information about the story in using smell, touch, sounds etc.

Next time your needing to help your child relax and laugh you can pull their earlobe and they will smile or create whatever emotion you linked with that action.
